Roger Phelps (Alternative Energy Engineer)
Helps Large Businesses to "Go Green"

I am an engineer who works to help corporations go green by converting them to solar and wind energy.

Because I am an engineer in the field of alternative energy people often ask me how they can learn to convert their homes to utilize more efficient types of alternate energy.  It is not an easy question to answer.  There is a large quantity of  information and products out there and some are better than others.  Also, it depends on what a homeowner is looking to do to enable his home to "go green".

There are hunderds of products on the market today that teach you how to convert your home to solar or wind power but many of these are not very good.  And because is very expensive to purchase the solar power equipment and hire a professional to install it many do-it-yourselfers are turning toward the idea of building their own solar and wind power to generate their home's electricity.

Homeowners need more than a book that tells them how to convert to alternative power.  They also need an very informative guide to show them how to build their own solar panels and wind turbines and how to connect it all together and make it work.

With a do-it-yourself go green package you can not only reduce your monthly power bill, but you might even be able to eliminate it completely.  If you do things the right way, you may even be able to get money from the power company when you have an excess of power that they redirect to other electric users on your power grid.

Don't waste your money and run the risk of creating problems for yourself.  Choose the right product with the right learning tools.  It is important to choose the right tools so that when all is said and done, and your alternative power is functioning well your property values will raise significantly.  If you make a poor choice the value of your home may decrease due to having all the right intentions but in non-working order.

In order to help you make the best decision regarding do-it-yourself solar and wind power products, I have evaluated many packages.  I have rated them on several levels and narrowed it down to the top five picks for any diy-er.  These kits have been rated on the following criteria:
  • The amount of Green Power that can be generated from one system
  • How well the guides are laid out and how easy they are to build
  • Higher ratings were given to those kits that were easiest to understand and had the best instructional blueprints and/videos
  • High points were also given to those kits that had supplies that were easily available... mostly at your local hardware store.  Some packages had parts that I couldn't even locate.
  • Those diy kits that had good value for the money and had low costs were given high points.  Let's face it, the main reason people want to turn to alternative power themselves is to save money.
  • How long the project took to complete from beginning to end was also evaluated.  The quicker the home was updated to solar or wind power and was actually running on this power was rated.
  • Lastly, the overall performance of the entire package was rated

To follow you will find our ratings for the top five products that can teach you how to go green. With each of our evaluations we did take the time to build each component that the book/video suggested, and in the process we converted a home.

I have many friends who have been bugging me to help them go green. Over a two month period of time (working on the weekends), that's exactly what I did. They paid for the parts and put in most of the work, I paid for the learning materials and helped them along the way.

The clear winner from our evaluations was Earth 4 Energy,  but the other four products that made the top five didn't fair too badly either. My recommendations are clearly laid out below, but if you do need any help choosing a package, don't hesitate to email me (roger.phelps AT CarriageSquare.ws) and I will answer any questions that you may have.

Once you have your home running on green power, please do let me know (email above). I enjoy hearing stories from others who have worked to choose the environmentally friendly route to power their homes.

To saving money and the environment,

Roger Phelps

The clear winner from our evaluations was Earth 4 Energy. This learning package is developed by Michael Harvey, and it is the most well put together green package that we tested.

When you buy Earth 4 Energy you will immediately be able to download the packaged. Included is the manual (about 300 pages), plans, blueprints, and how-to videos that make learning this one simple.

The focus of this package is on converting your home to both wind and solar power. Most importantly Michael focuses on how to do it for very little cost. All of the parts that Michael recommends will be available locally (they were for us), and most of the pieces we needed came from our hardware store.

Michael also gives you recommendations on how to get deep-cycle batteries for free. Generating power is one thing, but storing it is also important. With our free batteries, lower cost of parts, and the learning material, we were able to do an entire home conversion without a huge outlay of cash.

This package laid out everything for us from how to build a single solar panel to how to create a grid of batteries to store that power.

Best of all, when we finished the conversion, the power generated by the system was enough that we were feeding power back to the power company, even during peak usage times.

For being the most complete package, that also worked better than the others we tested, we are giving this one the best-green-learning-package award:

Adware Award 2009

Update: Right now Earth for Energy is being offered for the limited time price of $49.97. I've been told that this offer won't last long, and that soon the price will go back to it's original $89.97. If you're going to take our recommendations, now is the time to buy this one (save yourself $40).

In Summary: For  clearly laid out material, the lowest cost of building, and the best power generation we are recommending Earth 4 Energy as our  top pick. No other package we tested made going green so simple.

2. Home Made Energy

In second place we have a package called Home Made Energy. This one has been featured in Popular Science and Popular Mechanics magazines, so we expected it to fair well. We weren't disappointed.

The Home Made Energy package again consists of both eBooks and videos that work to teach you how to convert your home. The material is clearly laid out (although not quite as well as Earth 4 Energy) and the instructions are simple to follow.

When we tested the components that we built using this system the power generated by the solar panels and the windmill did match that of our winner.

The only complaint I had about this package was its focus. While Earth 4 Energy teaches you how to build and implement an alternative energy system for an entire home, this one focuses more on the individual components. It does get into converting the whole home, but but it isn't explained as well as with our winner.

3. Energy 2 Green

The third product on our list is Energy 2 Green. This one isn't a bad product, but it didn't fair as well as the first two on our list. I think that this one failed mostly because of the way things are explained.

Energy 2 Green uses the same types of parts, and suggests some of the same methods to build, but they don't explain how to put it together as well. Eventually we did get it all together, and it worked but it wasn't simple.

When we used this one to convert a home I helped my friend get started, and then he worked to build more of the solar panels we required. He ended up having to buy extra parts to make them work, and the power generated in the end didn't quite match that of the first two.

All in all this one isn't bad. The home did get converted, and it is generating enough power to run the entire home, but simply for easy of learning I would recommend the first two learning packages before Energy 2 Green.

4. Power 4 Home

Taking fourth place we have Power 4 Home. Again this one didn't fair too badly for power generation, but we had some other problems that put it in fourth.

The biggest problem with this one is the way the material is taught. All of the first three products on our list included both eBook and video components to make learning simpler.

With power 4 home, everything is laid out in written format. Now don't get me wrong, I love to read, but the absence of the videos did make it more difficult to learn what we were supposed to do.

In the end we did get a home converted, and our efforts generated enough power to keep it off the grid, but this one took longer than the others.

Another problem we had with this one was the products that they suggested we use. Instead of parts that can be found locally, power 4 home suggests a supplier list. This did drive the costs of every component up.

On their sales page they did state that you could create a windmill or a solar panel for less than $200, but if we had followed their part guide, we wouldn't have been able to.

5. Free Energy Options

The last product on our list is called free energy options. We had mixed feelings about this one. For power generation it did do well, and it did recommend methods to get parts for cheap. The problem was the way the material was presented.

With this one you don't get any videos, there isn't instructional blueprints. All you get is a manual. The manual itself is well written, and it did teach you what needed to be done. But, with the top products on our list learning is so much easier. This one lost big marks on ease of building because of it.

The package costs the same as either of the first two on our list, and it includes a lot less content. Mainly for this reason Free Energy Options is taking fifth place, and I would recommend one of the other four products before this one.
